HSE Effective Leadership
Leaders will have people that follow them whereas, managers have people to working for them. Leaders have different skill sets from managers however these skill set are interchangeable and Managers can become good leaders and vice versa. Below are the skill sets that we aim to improve during the training sessions of the HSE Effective Leadership Courses
Commitment
Leaders will demononstrate a commitment to safety through their bearing, behaviour and decision making. If managers believe and demonstrate that they will do everything they can to make the work environment safe they will become leaders.
Communication - Asking
Questioning technique is essential for leaders to determine competence assurance. This skill is often missed or misued but if used correctly i.e. open ended questioning rather than leading questions you will get answers that can be evaluated as to the reason or competency
Communication - Listening
Listening is a key componant of communications and often people will only hear and not listen. Obvious hearing but not listening can devalue relationships. Hearing is simply open to what someone is saying whereas listening is comprehension and effective responses
Personal Integrity
No Integrity can have an instant effect on workforce loyalty and they believe their leader not to have consitency or honesty. Management of emotions, being self-aware and caring will build trust and increase the quantity and quality of the followers.
Adaption
No single leadership style will be suitable for all cases and therefore a good leader adapts his skill set to meet each situation. A good leader should know when to use each skill i.e. when to use Coaching rather than giving orders, done by understanding the audience.
Conflict Management
The ability or competence to not walk past or around a problem without understanding and acting to recover, control or eliminate any safety issues. Confidence builds good managers and leaders, so have faith in your skills
Accountability
Managers without accountability skills will farm out issues and problems whereas leaders will take ownership, solve any issues, doing something about it, and then document it so that it can be a way to stop further problems
Visibility
Visibilty is a major componant of trust, its also is a way to demonstrate that you are a caring and responsible leader. This is not about Policing the workforce although can be , but being part of the team that are creating or producing
Setting Standards
Setting standards that are suitable and fair will create a safety culture that is dependant on inclusion. We will all police our safety culture if we believe in it. Inconsitancy breeds contempt and disruption, so leaders must walk the walk as well as the workforce
